Nappy Alliance sets the agenda at Labour party conference

Proving that not all politics is about Brexit at thr moment, the Nappy Alliance held a successful panel event on Tuesday 24 September at the Labour Party Conference in Brighton.

Titled ‘Empowering local government to tackle single-use plastic waste’, the panel was chaired by Sandy Martin MP, shadow minister for waste and recycling. Event panellists included Leonie Cooper  (London Assembly), Guy Schanschieff (Nappy Alliance) and Neha Viswanathan (CSpace).

The event saw the panel discussing how to empower local authorities to tackle single-use plastics as well as how reusable nappies can help the government hit the targets of its 25-year environment plan to eliminate avoidable plastic waste by the end of 2042.

The panel also highlighted the opportunities presented by the upcoming Environment Bill to reduce single-use plastic waste while also cutting costs for local government, families and single parents.

“We are not asking for a ban on disposable nappies, they can be an essential convenience for busy parents around the world,” said Guy Schanschieff, speaking on behalf of the Nappy Alliance. “However, for the average family using disposable nappies, the amount of plastic thrown away is equivalent to seven supermarket plastic bags per day.”

He continued: “We are operating in a different market now; people are willing to make the change and cut down on their plastic waste. We are not pressuring them to do something they don’t want to do, the willingness is there, it is about education and levelling the playing field to make reusable nappies as accessible as disposables.”

The Nappy Alliance members include the following passionate Reusable Nappy brands – Babi Pur, Bambino Mio, Bambooty, Charlie Banana, Close Parent, Little Lamb, The Nappy Gurus, The Nappy Lady, and Tot Bots.

These brands have joined forces to drive the awareness of the economic and environmental benefits of reusable nappies and promotes greater consumer choice for parents.
