New range of hemp-based reusable nappies hits market

The idea for the new Nottingham-based business, Green Cheeks, was developed by Lianne Stevenson during the first lockdown.

The new nappies are made from hemp, which is a very absorbent material, but is often overlooked in the sector, as it’s also seen as a premium material. Hemp is a natural, biodegradable fabric. The plant itself requires less land to grow, and less water to thrive, while also being a natural pesticide, meaning it needs less chemicals to grow,  making it an even more environmentally friendly option than the often-used microfibre option.

Green Cheeks nappies use 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton absorbent inserts, making the products slim and highly absorbent.

The collection features themes including nautical, woodland, botanical, tropical and nature, along with a dinosaur and unicorn option. The company is also working with some British artists to create bespoke designs.

A sticky velcro band makes the Green Cheeks nappies adjustable in size from newborn to potty training age, and versions with poppers will be next to launch.

Lianne told CWB: “I started working on the ideas for Green Cheeks during the first lockdown, Spurred by the many frustrations I’d encountered on my own cloth journey with my son Harrison, I wanted to create a product that would have solved my problems; namely affordable, reusable nappies that did what they should, and did it well. As a result, I am using hemp as standard with all of my nappies.”
