‘Essential’ role of toys underlined by The Toy Association in the US

Toy companies are urging their local legislators to ensure toys remain accessible during pandemic.

The Toy Association is urging US toy companies to get in touch with their local legislators to ensure that toys remain accessible during the coronavirus pandemic.

The organisation has put together a grassroots letter which underscores the essential role of toys and play in home learning for millions of American children whose schools and daycare centres are closed due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

“The Toy Association is tirelessly working on behalf of our members to ensure that toys and games remain accessible to families,” said Ed Desmond, executive vice president of external affairs at The Toy Association. “We encourage legislators to keep the doors open for toy businesses so that they can continue operating and providing toys – which are a source of comfort and happiness to so many – during these unprecedented times.”

In addition to the educational and emotional benefits of toys and play, the letter underscores the toy industry’s vital economic impact of $97.2 billion and the fact that it supports more than 623,000 US jobs and generates $13.1 billion in state and federal tax revenue each year.

It also emphasises the toy industry’s ability and commitment to safeguarding all employees from transmission and infection.

Ed continued: “We strongly believe that more than ever, America’s kids and families need the tools of play as they engage in at-home learning and try to alleviate some stress during this tumultuous period.”
