Pressure builds for ‘shop out to help out’ scheme

Fashion and retail execs have created the Save the Street group to call on the government to support indie retailers in an ‘eat out to help out’ style programme when non-essential retail reopens.

Save the Street has proposed a scheme similar to that implemented last summer to support pubs and restaurants, whereby the government would cover 50% of the cost of goods at independent retailers, capped at £10.

The retail sector represents 20% of the UK’s GDP and the group believes that independent retailers are the key to the economic recovery of local communities. They outline that as it stands, one in three British brands is set to disappear this year.

In an open letter to the Government, Save the Street said: “Immediate action is needed, or we face a future with hollowed-out streets and no places left for communities to come together. We need new support measures in place for independent retailers after one of their toughest years.”
