Online parenting marketplace celebrates successful first year

Babychum, an online marketplace for parents and children which launched a year ago, is now turning over £41.000 a week and supplying Harrods.

Launched by two friends in April 2020, Babychum also recently celebrated a milestone week as it turned over £41,000 after just one year of trading. The site was set up by Laura McBride and Laura Boswell, who each invested £1,000, during the first lockdown, and supports independent sellers with a wide range of sellers.

The duo also recently landed a deal with Harrods to supply the retailer with a luxury gold leaf toy box, retailing at £2,199.

Babychum was launched with 300 products and a handful of sellers and now offers 2,400 products from more than 463 sellers including sole traders and small businesses. The products cover a wide range of categories from gifts, nursery furniture and decor, to baby essentials such as weaning and cloth nappies.

Despite their nervousness around launching amidst the pandemic, Babychum turned over £20,000 in the first two weeks of trading and in June 2020, the pair were approached by TV star, Ferne McCann to collaborate on a children’s wear collection, which was launched in November.

Laura McBride said: “The Ferne collection was a huge success for our first ever celebrity collection, we had about 2.000 followers on Instagram which then flew up to 26,000, as well as selling thousands of units across the whole range.

“Sam Faiers took a photo of her little girl Rosie wearing one of our pink ‘HAPPY’ tracksuits from the Ferne collection and posted it on her Instagram grid and we pretty much sold out. Working with Ferne was a huge step forward.”

The business now has a social media following of 29,400 on Instagram and 6.600 on TikTok. Laura McBride added: “The aim for BabyChum is for it to eventually become a complete one-stop shop for gifts as well as practical items like prams, bottles and nappies.
