Mamas & Papas issues safety warning

Nursery and baby equipment supplier and retailer Mamas & Papas has issued a safety warning following the tragic death of an eight-month-old child.

The safety advice is directed at families who have purchased one of its cots after a tragic accident in which a child managed to move slats on the side of her cot and crawl through. The inquest was told that she became stuck between the cot and a wall and was unable to breathe.

Mamas & Papas launched an enquiry and found that the model of cot involved – which is no longer on sale – was completely safe if it was assembled correctly. Unfortunately, the vertical side slats were loose as the cot was missing three key components.

After the inquest, a spokesman for Mamas & Papas said that a full safety review had been carried out on the cot and similar models. ”This found that the cots are safe when assembled correctly and when the product instructions are followed,” he said.

The cot was discontinued in January 2018, but Mamas & Papas has written to customers as a precaution, reminding them of how the product should be put together. It has also produced a demonstration video, assembly check video and PDF instructions to help consumers ensure they are assembling it correctly.
